Saturday Lunch:

Herbert’s Fisheries is ‘world famous’ for their fish and chips lunch. The fish and chip lunch option is $15 for a fish and chip meal and a canned drink. If the weather is pleasant conference attendees may eat at the fishery location at the dock. If the weather is inclement, we will bring the lunches to the hotel. Conference attendees who do not wish to leave the hotel even in fine weather conditions should indicate so above. The fish served is whitefish with some lake trout mixed in. There is a restaurant at the Killarney Bay Inn for those who do not wish to eat fish and chips.

Saturday Family Tour:

This tour is scheduled concurrently with the sessions. The Friends of Killarney Park will offer a tour of the park, discussing its geology and ecology. Parking cost $13 per vehicle. Participants are free to make a donation to the Friends of Killarney Park. There is a limit to the number of people who can participate, so please register before June 30. The tour will be about 2 hours in length. Participants should bring appropriate hiking footwear, raingear, water and a snack.

Sunday Killarney Sites Tour:

A number of important archaeological sites exist in the Killarney area. We will explore several of these and incorporate a hike of about 3 hours on hiking trails in Killarney Provincial Park. The trails are in good condition however participants should be able to walk for some distance and there are some hills. Those interested should bring rain gear, warm clothing, appropriate hiking footwear, water and a snack. The tour would leave from the Killarney Bay Inn at about 9 am and would aim to get back by 12:30 pm.

Sunday Boat Tour to Sheguiandah Archaeological Site:
(REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED - TOUR COMPLETELY FILLED UP)

Background

The Shequiandah site on Manitoulin Island is well known by most Ontario archaeologists, being one of the first sites protected in Ontario in 1954, due to the lobbying of Tom Lee. Thought by Lee to be Pre-Clovis in age, has been re-dated in 1990 to about 9,500 radio-carbon years. It is a Parks Canada First Nations National Historic site, being one of the oldest quarry sites in Ontario and Canada. It is a multi-component site with Middle-Woodland, Archaic and Late-Paleoindian components, situated across about 114 acres of privately owned land. The town of NEMI (Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands) owns about 15 acres of the primary Zone 1 (most significant) lands (Figure 1), as well as control of the road allowances. The tour will follow the road allowance to the town lots, and participants are asked to follow the guide and stay with the tour in the pink zone, and not trespass on private property, nor collect artifacts.

Tour details

The Sheguiandah site is about 25 km from Killarney by water, and about 270 km by road. The boat tour will leave from the Pitfield General Store dock at 9 AM, depending on suitable weather. If there is heavy rain or high winds the water may be too rough for a pleasant trip. Wear a warm rain jacket regardless, as it can be cold out on the big water, and sturdy footwear, as the site has rough terrain and poison ivy in places. There are no prepared trails, and some wet spots and rough rocks in places, only a rough-cut trail, so you should be able to walk in such bush conditions. The boat trip from Killarney to Sheguiandah Government dock will be about 45-50 minutes in normal conditions, the site tour about 90 minutes and 45 minutes return, for about 3 hours total, however if there is a moderate swell (waves) it may be a bit longer.

Route

This North Channel part of Georgian Bay with the spectacular La Cloche Quartzite Mountains and crystal clear water is some of the finest boating in the world, even more so if the fall colors are out. The boat will go out western channel of Killarney, into the Lansdowne channel, along the north side of Badgely Island, by “Hole in the Wall” and across to Heywood Island. If we have time we may go though the Heywood interior channels, then proceeding to the west passing by Beaver Island and the south tip of Strawberry Island and into Sheguiandah Bay, landing at Government dock. There is a public toilet at the dock, but no refreshment facilities.

The site starts near the dock, and we will take the unopened road allowance up across the site, visiting the Middle-Woodland Sheguiandah East site, climbing the Nipissing beach with Archaic artifacts , over the “Mystic ridge”, and visit the old Lee excavations, where the “artifacts in till” were reported. We will climb up to the top of the quartzite ridge, staying on town property with possibly one exception when visiting the swamps 1-4 which were trenched and cored for pollen studies. We will be returning by the same route along the old Campbell road allowance ( Figure 1). We will not have time to visit the Centennial museum, as it would take too long to walk over. Our boat will return by about the same route, depending on wind and wave conditions and the captain’s wish for a smooth passage, arriving back in Killarney around 12 to 12:30 PM.
